Open House for Secondary Schools 2025: What Parents Need to Know

secondary school open house

Deciding on which secondary school your child will attend is one of the major steps in their academic journey.

The upcoming open house season gives you and your child an opportunity to explore what different schools offer, ask the right questions, and see which environment is the best fit.

These visits are more than just tours — they’re a chance to evaluate how a school will support your child as they transition from primary school into secondary school life.

In this guide, you’ll find tips on preparing for open house events — what key dates to note, what to look out for at each school, and how you and your child can use your visits to refine your school list with clarity and confidence.

Preparing Before You Step Through the Gate

check the ministry of education (MOE) website for more information

Before you and your child attend any open house for a secondary school, set the groundwork to make the most of your visit. Here’s how to get started:

1. Research each school thoroughly

Start by looking up the schools you’re interested in via their official website or the Ministry of Education (MOE)portals and take note of their school mission, core values, subject offerings, and any niche programmes.

It’s also helpful to check their past PSLE cut-off points and check the commute times. Some popular school zones to check are Mo Kio, Dover Road, Yishun Street or Jurong West.

If possible, explore how the school supports students in core subjects such as Maths, English and Science, and whether it offers Direct School Admission (DSA) opportunities.

2. Talk to your child about their interests and learning needs

Sit down with your child and have an open conversation. Ask questions such as:

  • What subjects do you enjoy most in primary school?
  • What kind of learning environment helps you do your best?
  • Would you prefer a school with strong academic support, or one with more emphasis on Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs)?

By understanding your child’s strengths, personality and learning style, you can evaluate whether a particular secondary school is the right fit.

After all, this decision isn’t about choosing the “best” school — it’s about choosing the school that best supports your child’s development.

3. Create a checklist of what matters most

Make a list of what both you and your child value in a school, such as:

  • Academic support and subject streaming
  • Breadth and type of CCAs
  • Distance from home and travel time
  • School culture and environment
  • How the school helps students transition into secondary school life

Having a checklist makes it easier to compare schools objectively after your open house visits.

4. Shortlist 3 to 5 schools to visit

Based on your research and discussions with your child, choose three to five schools whose open houses you’ll attend.

That way you’re not overwhelmed, and you can compare meaningfully. Remember to space out your visits where possible to give time for reflection in between.

2025 Open House Dates and What to Look Out for

Many schools like northlight school or outram secondary school offers open houses in November 2025

Many secondary schools hold their open house events in November (close to the PSLE results release), while some (especially for the DSA or IP pathways) have open houses as early as April or May.

Before you attend the event, make sure to take note of the following:

  • Whether it’s a physical open house or a virtual session (some schools offer both)
  • The need to register ahead (some popular schools regulate numbers)
  • Whether your child is invited to join or observe activities themselves
  • Materials to bring: notebook, questions list, water, comfortable shoes.

Here are selected schools with confirmed open house dates (please verify on each school’s website closer to the date):

Tip: Use the MOE School Finder to help create your shortlist.

Think Beyond the Tour: What Will the Next Years Look Like for Your Child?

Make the most of school open houses in Singapore by asking the right questions.

Visiting the open house is a great way to help your child build a strong foundation in Sec 1 and Sec 2, so they’re ready for the next stage.

Lower secondary years are where students transition from primary school, adapt to new subject loads, streaming, new friends, and often greater independence. So when you’re at the open house, ask about how the school supports such transitions:

  • Do they run bridging programmes?
  • How does the school support students who struggled in primary school in core subjects like Maths, English and Science?
  • What pastoral support is in place?
  • How are weaker learners supported, and how are stronger students stretched?
  • Does the curriculum allow your child the space to explore interest areas?
  • What about literacy, numeracy and foundational skills?

Also observe the school culture for signs such as how engaged are the students, if the staff is approachable, and how inclusive is the environment.

These are signs of how the school will help students settle into secondary school life and flourish academically and socially.

After the Visit: Reflect, Compare and Decide Together

discuss the best options for your child together

Talk it through with your child

Once the visit is over, have a relaxed chat with your child. Ask how they felt during the open house:

  • Did they feel comfortable in the school environment?
  • Could they see themselves learning there every day?
  • Did the teachers come across as approachable and clear?
  • What stood out — both good and not-so-good?

Your child’s gut feeling is important. It often gives insight into whether the school is a good personal fit.

Use a simple scorecard to compare schools

To make your reflections more structured, consider creating a simple checklist or scorecard for each school. Rate things like:

  • School environment (location, commute, school grounds)
  • Subject offerings (especially strength in Maths, Science and English)
  • Student culture (how students behaved, looked engaged or confident)
  • Support systems (academic help, teacher availability, counselling)
  • How well the school fits your child’s interests or learning needs

This approach helps you and your child compare schools more objectively and reduces decision stress.

Refine your shortlist

After attending a few open house events, narrow down your school choices to about six.

A good list includes a mix of aspirational and realistic options. Be sure to focus on where your child is most likely to thrive, not just what sounds prestigious.

Map out your next steps

Set a simple plan for what comes next:

  • Revisit school websites for any updates (like DSA application windows or changes in subject offerings)
  • Attend second open house rounds, if any
  • Start preparing documents if you’re considering Direct School Admission

With these steps, you’ll help your child feel informed, supported and confident — ready to take on secondary school with clarity and excitement!
